Because small is beautiful…
“Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius — and a lot of courage to move in the opposite direction.” I don’t agree with everything that Schumacher says in Small is Beautiful – it was published in 1973 – and his ideas about women for example are counteracted nicely by If Women Counted by Marilyn Waring. Perhaps the title is misleading – His idea of small is meant more in terms of appropriateness of scale, and felixibility rather than parochial or small mindedness and his criticism of a system that places the value of goods over human life and the sustainability of the planet are ideas still needing to be heard and discussed and could possibly be addressed in an independent Scotland.
